Design Wars is this Saturday, September 8th, 2012, at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Teams of SDSM&T students will battle it out to see who has the most creative engineering team on campus. They will be given a secret objective that morning, and have to overcome Apollo 13 based odds to accomplish a feat of creative engineering. Think Rube Goldberg meets Junkyard Wars/Top Chef. The grand prize is $1,000, and is a great way for student organizations to fund their various activities this year, not to mention the bragging rights that go with winning such a unique competition.

The primary objective of this research is to explore the correlations between measures of individual/team creativity and engineering design. The objective for this study will be investigated using two methods: measuring individual creativity using the CREAX creativity index test, and direct observation of processes and interactions of the team during the event. For the study, participants will be a part of a four person competition team, with two building (astronauts) and two designing (Houston).  The total number of teams is expected to be around 16, providing a total of approximately 64 study participants. Students are encouraged to come up with the most creative solutions to the problem, not simply the “best” way, which should allow for some very exciting contraptions.
